eJournal Club

The ACADEME eJournal club is a regular online discussion forum for discussing how scientific evidence might impact our everyday clinical management of patients at risk of cardiovascular events.

In each journal club, we’ll be joined by an author or investigator from a recently published paper looking at aspects of cardiovascular risk. That might mean that we’ll be discussing a new guideline, a new cardiovascular risk estimator, or an important new clinical trial.

The views expressed by the discussants are their personal and clinical opinions and don't necessarily reflect the opinions of the Steering Committee or ACADEME.

In this eJournal Club we are joined by Dr Ron McWalter, Consultant Physician at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Institute of Cardiovascular Research at the University of Dundee.  Dr McWalter was an investigator in one of the few trials that has looked at the impact of aspirin in previous cardiovascular events.

Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Identify conditions in which antiplatelet therapy has been proven to improve vascular outcomes.
  • Describe the effect of treatment with aspirin and antioxidants on cardiovascular disease outcomes in patients with diabetes and asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease.
